Sacred music and song can elevate and console, exalt and soothe.
With our Director of Music, Nicholas Keone Lee, and our musicians and singers, the Cathedral's congregation enjoys the rich Anglican repertory.
Cathedral ChoirsThe Cathedral Choir history can be traced back 150 years through rich detailed accounts, including royal baptisms, coronations, and Cathedral liturgy. Composed of the Choral Scholars and volunteer singers, the choir provides a strong, living tradition of choral music, central to the Cathedral’s liturgy. It is dedicated to the highest standards of performance of choral literature from Gregorian Chant and Renaissance polyphony, through works by contemporary composers.

Orvis Choral ScholarsAt the core of the Cathedral Choir are our eight Choral Scholars. These professional-level singers include university students, choral music teachers, and vocalists with American and European training. Some hold advanced degrees in music, and all are experienced in various aspects of singing including opera theater, musicals, symphony chorus, and numerous choral ensembles in Hawaii and beyond.
The Orvis Choral Scholars are involved not only in singing at services and concerts throughout the year, but also with liturgy, music development, and fundraising. Some of the Scholars also serve as section leaders for the Hawaiian Choir. |
The Great Organ: St. Andrew’s Cathedral Æolian-Skinner OrganAs a prerequisite to traveling to Hawaii, Bishop Staley made provision for an organ for the as yet un-built Cathedral. Since that day St. Andrew’s has been the home of significant examples of the King of Instruments. The current organ is primarily an Æolian-Skinner, built in 1961, the largest organ in the State of Hawai‘i and ranked in size amongst the top 50 in the world. Not only is it the ultimate accompaniment to liturgy in the Anglican tradition, it is also the foundation for music outreach into the community and the world, attracting internationally recognized organists for recital and recording opportunities, and accompanying non-liturgical performance.
Hawai‘i’s Largest Pipe Organ The Cathedral Organ is among the largest and most valuable assets and high-profile treasures of the Cathedral and requires significant expert maintenance in a tropical environment lacking constant temperature and humidity control. It is an asset whose future must be carefully managed. LEARN MORE> |

St. Andrew's Ringing Society (StARS)What does St. Andrews have that no one else in Hawaii has? In fact, that no other American church west of the Mississippi has? Change-ringing bells! And who does the ringing: a team of trained professionals? or a machine? No, a group of lay volunteers, people just like you. People who, a few years ago, had never heard of change-ringing. People who, like you, thought the ringing of the bells was a mighty but senseless tumble of sound. Now we’re the ones making that noise, and it makes a lot more sense to us. We love it, and we’d love it if you would join us and learn to do it too. READ MORE>
