The Wisdom of the Heart:
An Advent Morning of Reflection and Calm
with Carl McColman
The weeks leading up to Christmas can be hectic and busy, between shopping, holiday parties, concerts and other special events. But this is also the season of Advent — a time when people of faith are invited to take a pause and find the place in their hearts where they can touch the “still small voice” of Divine Love. This year, the Cathedral of St. Andrew is offering a morning of quiet reflection and meditation to help us all find that Advent calm in our hearts.
On Saturday, December 13, from 9 am to 1 pm, we’ll gather to reflect on “the wisdom of the heart” — drawing from scripture and the witness of Christian saints and mystics through the ages to honor Advent’s call to “be still and know” the living God who dwells in our hearts.
Our time together will include reflections on Advent’s themes — hope, peace, joy, and love —with a special emphasis on how these spiritual values can bring us closer to God in our daily lives. We’ll have plenty of time for personal prayer, for small group reflection, and for simply taking time to rest in the grace of this special season.
This quiet day of reflection will be facilitated by Carl McColman, a contemplative author and speaker who is visiting Hawai’i from Atlanta. Carl is spending Advent on the Big Island, where he is leading several programs based on his most recent book, Read the Bible Like a Mystic. He is also coming to Honolulu to join the community at the Cathedral for this time of contemplative renewal.
