Mission and Values

Our kuleana and privilege as this Cathedral Church
is to honor the legacy entrusted to us.
As a gathering place for all God’s people in the heart of Honolulu we will:

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness and the holiness of beauty
Care for children and youth
Stand with the oppressed

We Celebrate the Beauty of Holiness and the Holiness of Beauty

We are mindful of the beauty and aloha of this place. We are grateful for the royal commissions and tradition of support that makes this magnificent Cathedral possible. Still, we are mindful that each of us proclaims true beauty in how we live, and in how we love each other and all who enter our doors.

This heritage belongs to all, regardless of belief.
Thus, whatever your faith tradition, you are welcome.

More Than a Building:
We Are a Christian Community of Faith

As Episcopalians, we are followers of Jesus Christ, our Lord, and we believe in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  We begin with love, the ethic our Lord Jesus Christ lived every moment of his earthly life. We strive to respect the dignity of all and, when we (inevitably) fall short, we try to atone and improve.  We celebrate our unity in Christ while honoring our differences, always putting the work of love before uniformity of opinion.
  • In worship, we celebrate the beauty of holiness and give glory to God.
  • Our Christian faith is ancient, yet it is regularly renewed in today’s world via service, worship, study, and selfless acts.
  • We are willing to accept the challenge and responsibility of cultivating our personal formation as practicing Christians.
  • We engage the contemporary world without fear. We believe the teachings of Christ are as important and relevant to it as to us.
  • We seek to address the causes of human suffering in order to lessen it.
  • We seek to live the truth and the aloha of our location.

Land Acknowledgement

The Cathedral of St. Andrew acknowledges that the ‘āina on which we gather, this wahi pana, is in the Ahupuaʻa of Honolulu; in the moku of Kona; on the mokupuni of Kākuhihewa; in the Pa‘āina of Hawai‘i. This wahi pana is part of the larger territory recognized by Indigenous Hawaiians as their ancestral grandmother, Papahānaumoku.

We honor and give thanks to the founding patrons of our Diocese and this Cathedral, King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma. We gather from the gifted land on which our Cathedral stands, entrusted to this Church by the same Holy Sovereigns. The trust they placed in the Church was to care for their people, Kānaka Maoli, to provide for the keiki of their Kingdom, to care for all of Creation, and to strive for justice and peace.

We further recognize that Her Majesty Queen Lili'uokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom and these territories under duress and protest to the United States to avoid the bloodshed of her people. Queen Liliʻuokalani remained an active member of this Cathedral until her death.   The Cathedral of St. Andrew today honors this legacy and recognizes our kuleana – our responsibilities and our dear privileges - to care for this 'āina, for its people, and for the many generations yet to come. To the Glory of God.
